Amityville House - 112 Ocean Avenue

112 Ocean Avenue is better known as the 'Amityville Horror House', that that gained incredible notoriety as a haunted house following the publication of a book entitled, "The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson. This spawned a series of films that have had varying degrees of success. However, this all stems from an horrific murder that occured here on November 13, 1974, when Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family. The books and media that followed have resulted in a wide range of opinions as to the veracity of the alleged paranormal occurences. Some say haunting, some say hoax.

The paranormal claims of the Lutz family, who bought the house in late 1975, were broad. Phenomena were said to include levitation, damage to door and window locks, swarms of flies even in winter, cold spots, disembodied voices, stigmata, physical bodily marks, the smell of perfume and the presence of evil.

The house was visited by Ed Warren and Hans Holzer, who claimed that the house was indeed haunted. Others, such as Dr Stephen Kaplan, took an opposing view. According to reports over the years since, no other phenomena have been reported. As the property is privately owned it is NOT available for visits and the owners privacy should be respected.
